Abstrak

Determination of calcium ion levels is clinically useful in the diagnosis, identification of hypercalcemia in neoplasia, and in the management of critically ill adults and neonates or patients with serious clinical consequences. It is the responsibility of the clinical laboratory to select which specimen is most appropriate, for each clinical situation. The International Federation of Clinical Chemistry, recommends heparin as the anticoagulant of choice for the measurement of calcium ions. According to the Institute of Clinical Laboratory Standards, measurement of calcium ions using whole blood specimens is preferable (whole blood heparin), the use of plasma and serum specimens remains a solution, although it is not recommended, to avoid changes in pH, the specimen must be kept closed until it reaches analyst

The purpose of this study was to determine the average calcium ion level from arterial blood specimens and serum specimens, and to determine whether there was a significant difference in calcium ion levels from arterial blood specimens and serum, to provide better input to laboratory services, especially at the pre-analytic stage of examination specimens. calcium ion reference in Rumah Sakit Jantung dan Pembuluh Darah Harapan Kita (RSJPDHK) Jakarta.

The analysis of significance was tested with the t Test. The results of the test with 2 independent groups (t test) with 30 specimens for each group. The independent T test results obtained p value = 0.007.

In conclusion, the results of the examination of calcium ions with arterial blood samples obtained an average value of 1.192 mmol/L, with the lowest value of 1.07 mmol/L and the highest value of 1.25 mmol/L. Results Calcium ion levels in serum specimens obtained an average value of 1.23 mmol/L with the lowest value of 1.12 mmol/L and the highest value of 1.38 mmol/L. There was a significant difference in average calcium ion levels between arterial blood specimens and serum specimens, in 95% significance level.
