The Effectiveness of the Animated Video “Pertama Mens” in Improving Adolescents’ Knowledge and Attitudes about Menarche

Abstract

Menarche is a sign of puberty that indicates the maturity of the female reproductive organs; however, many adolescents are not yet prepared to face it due to a lack of education. Insufficient information often leads to fear, anxiety, and improper hygiene practices. This study aimed to determine the effect of the animated video “Permen” on adolescents’ knowledge and attitudes about menarche at SDN Kayu Putih 08 Pagi, East Jakarta. The research used a quantitative method with a one-group pretest-posttest design involving 54 female students from grades IV to VI. Data were collected using questionnaires and analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. The results showed a significant increase in knowledge and attitudes after the intervention (p=0.000), with average knowledge scores rising from 74.44 to 87.77 and attitude scores from 53.20 to 69.00. It can be concluded that the “Permen” animated video is effective in improving adolescents’ knowledge and attitudes about menarche; therefore, it is recommended as an educational medium for reproductive health programs in elementary schools to help young girls be better prepared for their first menstruation.
